Ericeria: Surf, Beaches and Great sunsets

ericeria

Ericeira, Portugal, is the kind of place that effortlessly blends laid-back coastal charm with dramatic Atlantic beauty. Known as one of Europe’s premier surf destinations, this small fishing town sits on rugged cliffs overlooking turquoise water, just far enough from Lisbon to feel like an escape—yet close enough for an easy day trip or weekend getaway.

Why Visit Ericeira

Cobblestone streets wind through whitewashed houses with blue trim, opening onto lively squares, oceanfront cafés, and hidden viewpoints where the cliffs drop straight into the sea. While surfers come from all over the world to ride the powerful waves (Ericeira is a World Surfing Reserve), you don’t need to surf to fall in love with the town. Fresh seafood, golden sunsets, relaxed nightlife, and coastal walks make it appealing for everyone—from solo travelers to families.

Ericeira still feels authentically Portuguese. You’ll see fishermen repairing nets by the harbor, locals chatting over espresso, and bakeries selling warm pastel de nata in the morning. It’s casual, friendly, and refreshingly unpolished compared to bigger resort towns.

How to Get to Ericeira from Lisbon

Getting from Lisbon to Ericeira is simple and affordable, with a few good options depending on your travel style.

1. Bus (Easiest & Most Popular)

This is the most straightforward way.

  • From: Campo Grande bus terminal (Lisbon)
  • Company: Mafrense
  • Duration: About 1 hour to 2 hours
  • Cost: Budget-friendly

Buses run frequently throughout the day and drop you right in Ericeira’s town center. Campo Grande is easy to reach via Lisbon’s metro (Green or Yellow line), making this option very convenient even if you don’t have a car.

2. Car (Most Flexible)

If you don’t have car – take Uber/Bolt – whichever is cheaper. We went 4 of us and it costed us 10 euro each.

  • Duration: About 45–60 minutes
  • Route: A8 motorway north from Lisbon, then follow signs to Ericeira

This is a great option if you plan to beach-hop or visit nearby spots like Mafra or Ribeira d’Ilhas. Parking in Ericeira can be tight in summer, but short-term and paid options are available.

3. Train + Bus (Less Direct, Not Recommended)

There’s no direct train to Ericeira. You’d need to combine a train with a bus or taxi, which usually takes longer and offers no real advantage over the direct bus.
